Good Horse-Keeping Product Approval Recipient

“We used Grande on our 24-year-old retired roping horse, which has severe arthritis and periodic cases of diarrhea. Previously he had been on a total senior product supplement, as well as a mobility supplement. After 30 days of being on Grande I was able to discontinue any additional supplements – except for a teaspoon of aspirin daily. Bay has had a great winter, so far. He has been alert, sound, and riding better then ever. I am a true believer in the power of Omegas in keeping these older horses healthy and sound. Like my show mare that I put on Horseshine after testing it last fall, Bay will be on Grande for the rest of his life!”  "With all the press about the importance of omegas in a horse's diet, products like Omega Grande are timely in today's equine market.  It is very easy to top dress grain rations with it, and horses love the taste." - Laurie Cernie, www.good-horsekeeping.com/?page_id=16

Panadoro for Omega Grande

“Panadero has been on Omega Fields’ products since he arrived from Spain two years ago. Panadero loves the taste of Omega Fields® products. I really like how I did not have to feed psyllium anymore to prevent sand colic. His coat, mane, and hooves are so healthy. He even shines when he is dusty and dirty from rolling. Julie Krone, a member of Panadero’s fan club said, “We all have to wear sunglasses around these horses, they are so shiny.” The Omega Fields® stabilized, ground flax-based products are very high quality and are very affordable. I will always use Omega Fields® products!” –Lisa Alley-Zarkades, CA

Omega GRANDE® – finest quality COMPLETE supplement – Made from stabilized, ground, whole flaxseed, stabilized rice bran, ground grain sorghum seeds, custom blended vitamins and minerals, Diamond V® yeast(direct fed microbial), and biotin; Omega GRANDE® is reality accepted by horses and is easy to serve.

Two separate powerful plant-based antioxidants provide functional immune support for your horse.

Studies have shown that yeast enhances digestibility and hindgut fermentation.

Your horses need:

  • Smooth skin texture with added luster (beautiful bloom) to the coat
  • Strong solid hooves (restores cracked brittle hooves)
  • Strong immune system and digestive stability
  • Full athletic potential and reproductive efficiency
  • Smooth muscle action, less soreness and stiffness, shorter recovery time (alleviates stiff, immobile joints)
  • Sand colic prevention (flax mucilage traps and suspends sand, moving it out of the GI tract)

What are sources of Omega-3?

In the animal world - cold water fish is the richest source of Omega-3 essential fatty acids. In the plant world - flaxseed is the richest source of Omega-3 essential fatty acids. In fact ... flaxseeds contain the same ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 as does a good blend of fresh pasture grass. That's why stabilized ground flax seed is such an effective natural alternative for Insulin Resistant (IR) horses who cannot have fresh pasture grass.

What is Omega-3 important for?
Cutting-edge research from facilities all over the world indicates that Omega-3s play a crucial role in maintaining health. Omega-3 fatty acids make up the molecules in the membranes of every one of the billions of cells throughout the body -- especially in all the organs (skin is the largest organ of the body), eyes and brain. They have been found vital in new tissue formation, play a part in keeping cholesterol levels down, may act as blood thinners by keeping arteries from sticking and their anti-inflammatory properties may be useful in treating autoimmune dysfunctions and arthritis.

Why do flaxseeds need to be ground?
The hard outer shell of the whole flax seed needs to be broken in order for any health benefits to be imparted to the body. Otherwise, the seeds just get passed through the body and get excreted via the bowels. So any seeds not being ground by the teeth, simply pass through. Concerning grinding your own whole flax seed -- not only does it take you extra time and energy -- but you also have to be careful about the stability factor, because flax that hasn't been stabilized can go rancid if not properly stored. You have to refrigerate or freeze any leftover ground flax. Then you have to be disciplined enough to diligently clean out your grinder (most folks use a small coffee grinder) to make sure the ground flax is totally cleaned out.

Better than the competition:
You can have confidence in the Premium, Human-Grade, Non-GMO, 99.9% Pure, Stabilized, Ground, Fortified Flax we use in our Omega GRANDE® formula.  Proprietary stabilization technology provides a stable, ground, fortified flaxseed composition as a rich source of Omega-3 in the diet.

  • Proprietary stabilization technology binds (chelates) the naturally-occurring lignans (powerful antioxidants) in the flax seed to those wonderful Omega-3 essential fatty acids. Therefore, when the flax seeds are ground, the antioxidants serve to protect the integrity of the essential fatty acids for a full twelve months.
  • Proprietary stabilization technology includes the inclusion of B-6 and Zinc when the seeds are going through the grinding process. Flax seed contains a natural B-6 antagonist, so B-6 needs to be added to ground flax. B-6 and Zinc not only enhance the stabilization of the essential fatty acids, but also fortify the ground flax seed with the nutrients used by the body when flax seed is being metabolized.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR METABOLICALLY CHALLENGED HORSES:
Although Omega GRANDE® is a super source of Omega-3s, plant and vitamin based antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and Diamond V Yeast -- we know this supplement would test high in NSC (Non Structural Carbohydrates) for starch and sugar because of the rice bran and ground grain sorghum in the recipe. Therefore, Omega GRANDE® is not recommended for IR or Cushings horses.

However, Omega Horseshine® is recommended as an effective Omega-3 supplement for Cushings and IR horses. Omega Horseshine®, has a very low 4.4% NSC value (as sampled basis) coming from 0.6% Starch and 3.8% Sugar and is recommended as a safe source of essential Omega-3 for IR/Cushings horses. It is true that the Omega 3 in flax substitutes for what a horse on a dry lot is missing in not being on pasture. Please see more information below.

Many equine natural-nutrition experts recommend horses should eat fats in amounts and types that mimic their ancestral diet. The natural equine diet of fresh grasses is extremely low in fat, with the naturally occurring fat predominantly Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acid. The Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acid levels in fresh grasses are at 4:1 (Omega-3 to Omega-6). Ground flax seed has Omega-3 and Omega-6 levels that are the closest to fresh grasses. The Omega-3 and Omega-6 levels in flax seed run at least 4:1, often even higher.

Omega Horseshine® contains 30% crude fat and has a 39% Carbohydrate level with a NSC level of 4.4% (Starch 0.6% and Sugar 3.8%). It is one of the safest and most natural ways to supplement the healthy Omega-3 fat in animals -- which provides side "benefits" of beautiful bloom, soft smooth skin, strong solid hoof growth, prevention of inflammatory problems from bug bites/allergies, relief from arthritic pain, and sufficient Omega-3 for pregnant mares. And it is safe for your metabolically challenged horses. We also would like to recommend that you visit one of the most relevant and interesting sources of information on the web concerning effective treatment for Cushings and Insulin Resistant (IR) horses.

"Mare experienced more than usual hoof growth (after only 7 weeks on Omega GRANDE)! ... The results are there!"

Just wanted to follow up on our results from switching to your Omega GRANDE supplement. Our 'test' mare has been on it since the beginning of March. I will be ordering your product after sending this email for all three of our Western Pleasure horses! It has continued to give the same benefits as the Equine Mega Omega without the hassle of giving an oil supplement as well as some additional results/benefits. Our farrier was doing some corrective work on this mare and when he redid her last Friday (she was last done the week after starting her on the Grande), he was excited to be able to remove the pads he had on her front feet as she had had more than usual hoof growth in the last 7 weeks. Guess she will be on the 5 week schedule now as the others!  I was also getting ready to order a sand colic supplement since it is warmer now in MO and they will be doing daily turnout time in the stable's dry lots but thankfully was reviewing the info on the Grande and found that is already 'covered'! The only 'downside' of using the Grande was that we had to use bigger buckets to make up their daily supplement/treat 'end of day' buckets to accommodate the 3 scoops!  We are also ordering your dog supplement, Omega Canine Shine, for our two Jack Russells. They were also on a oil supplement!  It will be easier taking both the dogs and horses supplements to the shows but most importantly, the results are there! Thanks again for your time in forwarding all the info/research on GRANDE.

"Love Omega Grande for my TB rescue"

FOR MANY YEARS WE HAVE OWNED PAINTS AND QUARTER HORSES, BEING THAT MIKEY WAS MY FIRST THOROUGHBRED, I WAS TOLD BY MANY FRIENDS, THAT I WOULD NEED TO KEEP AN EYE ON HIS HOOVES, THAT THEY MIGHT NOT BE AS  STRONG AS THE QUARTER HORSES I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN USE TO. . SO WITH THAT I RESEARCHED MANY PRODUCTS AND FOUND THAT OMEGA GRANDE WAS THE PRODUCT FOR ME, WHAT I WASN'T EXPECTING WAS THE BETTER  MOBILITY IN HIS JOINTS AFTER A FEW DAYS OF BEING ON IT. I LOVE THIS PRODUCT, AND RECOMMEND IT TO EVERYONE.
P.S. HIS FEET ARE FABULOUS ;)

Q. I am trying to consolidate feed/supplements and reduce the number of jars in the tack room and $$, but still be sure that my 2 horses are covered with the necessary v & m intake: 1.) I have 2 geldings: 13 yo very easy keeper and 9 yo with no weight problems. Additionally, the 13 yo has Lymes disease which flares up from time to time and must be treated with long course of antibiotic, and is often very arthritic, particularly in shoulders and fetlocks...he's mostly a pasture ornament these days. 2.) Because of their difficult nutritional needs, I have been feeding them a mixture of oats and barley (so I can adjust the calorie intake for each), mostly grass hay and pasture, and supplementing their v & m and fats separately. I've been using ground hemp for the Omegas, but having to have it come from Canada makes it very expensive. Dynamite TNT for supplements, also pretty expensive. 3.) If I switch over to the Omega GRANDE, I'm hoping to save some money, but still provide them with both the v & m and fats for their optimum health needs without having to change their grain or grass/hay intake. Correct?
A. Please see our answers to your questions:

1.) The high Omega-3 -- a powerful anti-inflammatory -- in Omega GRANDE should offer joint relief for your 13 year.
2.) With Omega GRANDE, you will be able to eliminate the hemp and the Dynamite TNT.
3. You are absolutely correct!
Q. Could you tell me how much Omega Grande to feed to a 850 pound horse? I plan on top feeding it with Manna Pro Super Horse 10. I currently use horseshine with Manna Pro's Equi-prep vitamin mineral supplement. With 4 vitamin E capsules thrown in which are 1000 each. If I use the Grande I will not need to put in the vitamin E will I?
A. Omega GRANDE is a COMPLETE supplement, including all daily vitamins and minerals required for a 1,000 lb horse, included in a 3-scoop (1.5 cup) daily serving. We recommend the 3-scoop (1.5 cup) daily serving for your 850 horse. Please see information below ("in quotes"), for you from Dr. Kris Hiney, Omega Fields’ equine nutrition expert who headed up our formulation team for the product Omega GRANDE, concerning the rest of your questions:

"A little background of Vitamin E:
Natural sources of Vitamin E – seed germ or germ oils from plants; green forage or hay.
Vitamin E fxn’s = “antioxidant”, muscle structure, reproduction.
Vitamin E’s utilization is dependent on adequate Selenium (Se)
• Many supplements containing Vitamin E also contain Selenium. Because Selenium can be toxic, make sure your horse doesn't get more than 3 mg of this mineral per day. (Note: Omega GRANDE contains 0.95 mg per 3-scoop serving.) If your horse needs extra Vitamin E and is already receiving adequate Selenium, you may want to supplement Vitamin E alone. There are various forms of vitamin E in horse feeds and supplements, look for dl-alpha Tocopheryl acetate, as it has good activity and better stability for storage than most other forms (this is form of Vitamin E in Omega GRANDE!). Note: 1 mg of dl-alpha Tocopheryl acetate is equal to 1 IU of vitamin E.

You also have to take into consideration – nutrient requirements for a feeding program to meet the needs for different type of horses, work type, life stage, etc: Maintenance; Growth – young horse; Working horse; Reproduction; Lactation – mare with foal.

Currently you may be over-feeding Vitamin E. Of the data I summarized earlier this year, concerning supplementation of anti-oxidants, the only studies which yielded positive results fed at a rate of between 1000 and 3000 IU per of Vitamin E. These levels have been shown to stabilize the Vitamin E status in the blood of exercising horses.

However, it did not alter any other parameter studied. Any study feeding at higher levels found no statistical differences, in at least any parameters studied. The typical recommendation for a normal performance horse is actually closer to just 1000 IU/d. The elevated levels would actually be for horses in fairly strenuous training, or those that might suffer from some other condition. These would include neuromuscular disorders, respiratory disorders, or other alterations of a normally functioning anti-oxidant system.

Concerning your feeding program, one 3-scoop serving of Omega GRANDE should provide 700 IIU of vitamin E per day. That should be combined with what the horse is receiving from the Mann Pro Super Horse 10.

Visiting their web-site yielded two different products - Elite 10 and Performance 10. Both formulations contain Vitamin E at 80 IU/lb. The recommended feeding guidelines are to provide between 6-10 lbs of the product per day. This would provide between 480 and 800 IU of Vitamin E depending on the feeding rate. Thus, supplementing with both Manna Pro Super Horse 10 and Omega GRANDE - the horse would be consuming 1180 - 1700 IU of Vitamin E per day. If you desire to feed Vitamin E at the upper levels of studies which have yielded some positive results - that would be only 1-2 additional capsules.

Now if the horse has some underlying pathologies we are not aware of, I would recommend to follow your treatment program. However, the normal horse should be fine with just the two products alone -- Omega GRANDE and Manna Pro Super Horse 10) -- without adding additional capsules. Hope that helps."

Please keep in mind that these are only our feeding suggestions or recommendations. We believe it is always advisable to check with your equine nutritionist or your veterinarian concerning dietary changes you are considering for your horses.
My friend has an opened bag of Omega GRANDE. She's had it for over a year, maybe 2 years. It's been kept in a plastic container. She hasn't use it up and would like to give it to me to try it. Would this still be OK to give to my horse? Or would it not be good any longer?
A. There should be Use By Date printed on the white tape that seals the bottom of the bag -- then you know for sure. However, if you do not have the bag any longer -- and you believe the product may very well have been open and stored for over one year, we do recommend that you purchase your own bag of Omega GRANDE. You will not be disappointed with the results you will see for your horse!
Q. I love Omega GRANDE, but my horses don't love the powdery consistency...any thoughts of putting it into a liquid or even better a textured feed type consistency?
A. First (1.), we will provide you with some basic information concerning the pelletizing process, in order to help you understand why Omega Fields does not pelletize Omega GRANDE®. We purposefully choose not to have Omega GRANDE pelletized in order to keep it as fresh as possible, and maintain it as a natural, whole, functional food. Then (2.), we will discuss possible alternate ways to feed Omega GRANDE (other than top-dressing over feed)

1.) Information concerning the pelletizing process: The conventional method for manufacturing pellets involves forcing a feed mixture under pressure through a metal plate called a die. This die contains holes of the desired pellet size. As the mixture is extruded through the die holes, a rotating blade cuts the feed to the desired length. Although there are many variations in equipment design, all pelleting machines involve the extrusion principle. There are many disadvantages to this type of pelletizing operation. A large amount of pressure is required to force feed through the dies, which results in friction and, consequently, heat. Often pellets coming off the dies are so warm that they cannot be held in one's hand. The nutritive value of diets subjected to these conditions obviously is reduced through oxidation of heat-sensitive components. In addition, excessive heat and pressure frequently cause material to clog the dies, requiring stoppage of the process until the die plate is removed and cleaned. The operating cost is high, since the extruding operation requires considerable maintenance labor beyond that needed for production. We have also learned that the pelletizing process works best with formulas that contain a much higher percentage of molasses, and we are not about to add molasses to Omega GRANDE!

2.) Alternate ways to feed Omega Horseshine: Fellow horse owners have successfully mixed Omega GRANDE with one or more of the following: water, apple butter, apple juice, apple cider vinegar, carrot juice, molasses -- to create a tasty, nutritious wet mash their horses love. You can also mix each scoop-full of Omega GRANDE® with just enough water to have it stick together and hand feed it to your horse -- who will think it is a big old treat!
Q: Do you think I could use the Omega GRANDE to make my own horse treats?
A. Thank you for your question concerning using Omega GRANDE to make your own treats. Please see info below.

1.) Omega Nibblers® are the most convenient, great tasting, and totally functional treat, containing the best ratios of the full spectrum of natural Omega EFAs -- higher in 3 and 9 and lower in 6 -- to complement your horse's health. Omega Nibblers were formulated by our biochemist in consultation with several veterinarians to help maintain the health of your horse. Highest quality, all-natural ingredients include stabilized ground flaxseed, ground grain sorghum seed, hulled barley, rolled oats, blackstrap molasses, Diamond V Yeast, salt, mixed Tocopherols, zinc sulfate, and vitamin B-6. Stabilized ground flaxseed provides Omega-3, antioxidants, and soluble/insoluble fiber; ground grain sorghum seed (which we grind ourselves), hulled barley, and rolled oats are added for their powerful antioxidant values; studies have shown that Diamond V Yeast enhances digestibility and hindgut fermentation, and mixed Tocopherols provide natural preservative qualities.

2.) As a suggestion for “one of the most basic treats ever” – mix can also mix each scoop-full of Omega GRANDE® with just enough water to have it stick together and hand feed it to your horse -- who will think it is a big old treat!

3.) There are no contraindications to including Omega GRANDE as an ingredient in your own recipe for baked horse treats. In fact, it is an excellent way to obtain the healthy constituents found in Omega GRANDE. Studies have shown that both the ALA and lignans in flaxseed remain stable under common baking temperatures of 178ºC (350ºF).

Our bottom-line recommendation: Choosing any or all of the above would be an excellent indication that you are smart, informed, and love your horses!
Q: Is Omega GRANDE safe to feed with oats -- especially concerning the Calcium to Phosphorus levels?
A. Omega GRANDE – the COMPLETE equine supplement -- is safe to feed with straight oats.

Omega GRANDE was formulated to provide the essential vitamins and minerals required for performance horses with the added benefits of stabilized Omega-3 fatty acids, Omega Grande® eliminates the need for extra supplementation.

The Calcium (Ca) and Phosphorus (P) levels in Omega GRANDE are designed to be balanced with the correct ratio of 2:1 for the supplement itself. Omega GRANDE is not going to be a significant source of the macro minerals Ca and P in a horse’s diet due to the amount in which it is fed compared to the whole diet of the horse. So please note that to ensure a balanced Ca:P ratio, you need to take the whole horse’s daily ration into consideration, including your forage type, concentrate type, and supplementation regime.

OAT GRAIN - Ca % = ranging from – 0.08-0.09 and P % = ranging from 0.34 to 0.38
- (crimped oats are our suggested best option when selecting oats for your active horses)

To calculate Ca:P ratio ( keep in mind that types of forage and concentrates vary from region to region) – to find our your actual % of the feed you are providing your horse, I would recommend getting your forage tested, use the feed tag provided on your concentrate bag, and the guaranteed analysis provided to you by your supplement manufacturer- via the product package, on their website, etc.
1. Convert the number of pounds of each feed to kilograms by dividing pounds by 2.2.
• Including your forage, concentrate and supplements
o IE: type of hay and in your case – oats
2. Multiply these numbers by both the calcium and phosphorus content of each feed.
• % x Kg
• Multiply this number by 1000 to convert to grams, a more convenient number to work with
3. Now add the values for Ca together
4. Now add the values for P together
5. Divide the total calcium by the total
phosphorus. This is the calcium-phosphorus ratio if you fed this particular ration.
Q: Very excited about your Grande. I have some questions for you. Do I have to worry about any weight gain expected with this? I have a WB 2 year old that is 16.2h. He only gets 1 lb. of low starch extruded grain 2xday to mix his supplements in. I have him on OCD pellets and have been giving him a vit/min supplement (which he is not found of). d/t low grain intake, but I would like him to get your Grande instead. He gets excellent orchard grass hay. How much Grande should I give him every day? I have a yearling (16 mos old) Friesian/WB gelding. He gets 3 1/2 lbs. grain per day and a low nutritional pasture/grass hay free choice. How much Grande should I give him per day? Will he gain weight with the Grande? I would rather the grain per day get lowered than the Grande if this happens.
A: Good for you that you are taking the necessary time and energy to determine the best supplements for your WB 2 year old that is 16.2h and yearling (16 mos old) Friesian/WB mix gelding. For your WB 3 scoops (1 - 1/2 cups) is the amount suggested for a 1,000 to 1,200 lb. horse. You can eliminate the vit/min supplement when feeding Omega GRANDE! For your yearling the same recommended amount applies. Omega GRANDE is recommened for working horses on grass hay. Although he should not be gaining extra weight with Omega GRANDE -- it may be a good idea to cut back by 1/2 lb. on the grain per day, if that happens.
Q: Could you tell me the difference between your Omega GRANDE and Platinum Performance Equine?
A: Let's take a moment to review and compare Platinum Performance Equine and our premium horse feed supplement, Omega GRANDE®. Then you'll be equipped with enough knowledge to enable you to make the best horsecare choice for you and your horses.

Detailed Description of Omega GRANDE: Omega GRANDE – the premium COMPLETE equine supplement -- is formulated to provide the recommended daily essential vitamins and minerals (custom-formulated and blended mix) required for performance horses with the added benefits of super anti-inflammatory Omega-3 fatty acids from the best premium stabilized ground flaxseed, stabilized rice bran & ground grain sorghum seed (two powerful plant-based antioxidants high in Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) to help build a strong immune system), Diamond V® Yeast (effective probiotic as an aid for digestion), biotin, and a custom-formulated vitamin/mineral mix. When the body has proper functional nutrition, in the right balance -- the level of cell membrane integrity improves -- thus improving the level of optimal health. Omega GRANDE® eliminates the need for extra supplementation and can also be used as an alternative for psyllium to prevent sand colic. It is readily accepted by horses and is easy to top serve over feed. The stabilized ground flaxseed in Omega GRANDE also acts to buffer excess acid and aids in the stabilization and modulation of blood glucose. Omega GRANDE is very rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Omega-3s are powerful anti-inflammatories, so they help with the reduction and prevention of inflammation at the cellular level, hence they naturally work from the inside out in every cell to reduce and help prevent inflammation from joint pain and muscle tieing up -- and promote healing.

Improve hoof strength and growth: Since poor hoof growth may be a sign of Omega-3 deficiency, and Omega GRANDE provides the highest levels of Omega-3 -- it is an excellent choice for helping create healthy strong thick-walled hoof growth without cracks. There is also 5.0 gr of Biotin per serving. Based on our customers' comments on the results they've seen -- they were able to cut way back on or discontinue any additional hoof supplements when supplementing with Omega GRANDE.

Beautiful shiny coat and healthy skin: Problems with poor hair condition or dull dry coat/skin may be attributed to an Omega-3 deficiency in the horse's body. The stabilized ground flax used in Omega GRANDE is very high in Omega-3 essential fatty acids (flax is the richest source of Omega-3 in the plant world). This makes it ideal because it is heavily tipped in favor of the Omega-3s your horse's diet may be missing. Also the custom-blended mix of required daily vitamins and minerals helps assure that your horse is getting the correct balance for all-over body health -- from the inside out. One of the first visible signs when supplementing with Omega GRANDE will be a soft shiny coat.

Digestive stability: Studies have shown that Diamond V Yeast enhances digestibility and hindgut fermentation. The ground flaxseed in the Omega GRANDE also acts as a digestive aid.

Alleviate inflammation associated with joint pain: The membrane, or outer coating, of every one of the billions of cells in the body are unusually rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. In fact Omega-3 fatty acids are the structural fat that makes up this membrane and play a vital role in how cells function. To understand how Omega GRANDE® (as a rich source of stabilized Omega-3 essential fatty acids and immune building plant and vitamin based antioxidants) helps improve a horse's quality of life, let’s take a look at how cells behave when they are aging and/or damaged by trauma such as injury, surgery, over-training, allergic reactions, stress, or disease. When a cell is irritated or damaged, or when it begins to age, its membranes break down. As a result, compounds contained within the cell walls are released into the cell matrix. Some of these substances, such as histamine, give rise to inflammation and associated pain.

Inflammation is a horse's natural response to injury. Inflammation is characterized by redness, swelling, heat and moderate to intense discomfort. When a joint becomes inflamed, your horse may experience any or all of these symptoms. If this occurs in joint areas it can prevent the joint from moving properly, leading to stiffness and loss of function. Researchers have found that the "diseases of aging" or "damage by trauma" in horses have similar underlying factors: a decrease in cell stability leading to membrane damage and subsequent release of compounds that promote damage, spasm and inflammation.

The Omega-3 essential fatty acids and antioxidants in Omega GRANDE® work by stabilizing the membranes of the cells, promoting healing of existing damage and helping to prevent further damage. On a practical level, this means quality of life is improved, and you will see your horse experiencing freedom from pain. Many customers are able to cut way back on or discontinue glucosamine supplements altogether.

Preventive benefits: Omega GRANDE's base of stabilized ground flax seed helps maintain proper fluid and electrolyte balance in the small intestine that will lessen the incidence of tieing up and muscle cramping. The proper mineral and vitamin nutrition (in Omega GRANDE's custom blend) is important to help minimize oxidative stress and promote proper muscle function.

Effective alternative for psyllium to prevent sand colic: The stabilized ground flax in Omega GRANDE contains a high mucilage gum content (soluble fiber) that swells and takes on a gel-like consistency when it enters the digestive system -- trapping and suspending sand, carrying it out -- helping prevent impaction and sand colic. (Mucilage gum is a type of polysaccharide that becomes viscous when mixed with water or other fluids.) There is no need for adding psyllium when supplementing with any of our flax-based Omega Fields' products.

There is a neat demonstration you can perform yourself that illustrates how effective the ground flax in Omega GRANDE is as a sand colic preventative. Mix Omega GRANDE with water and allow it to gel. Do the same thing with any product containing ground psyllium husks. The amount of "stickability" of each is very visible when you put a dipping or stirring stick into both the resulting mixtures. When you remove the stick you will be able to see how the material clings. When you remove the stick from the Omega GRANDE mixture, you will note the thicker "slime" or "goo" that coats the stick. This is the same slimy mucilage that forms when Omega GRANDE is fed to your horse and it is what suspends the sand, and carries it out of the horse's gut. When you remove the stick from the ground psyllium product mixture, you will note that the stick tends to "pop" free and there is less sticky "slime" or "goo".

Detailed Description of Platinum Performance: According to their website, Platinum Performance is a comprehensive foundation formula for all horses. However, we believe that Platinum Performance cannot be considered a mineral supplement beyond what is already present in the (some high carb!) ingredients. Major mineral levels are very low. Traces are also very low and in ratios that won't help a bit with most hays. The flax is a benefit, of course -- but you are getting that in Omega Horseshine (and it is stabilized and there is more of it per serving!).

Note: Sugar (molasses) is added to Platinum Performance to make it more palatable to horses (it's the 7th ingredient). There is no sugar added to Omega GRANDE.

Bottom-line: Omega GRANDE is COMPLETE and is the only supplement your horses will need with either grass or hay. Omega Grande® is highest quality and economical per recommended serving --plus there is more Omega-3 per serving (27,396 mg per day with Omega GRANDE versus 18,900 mg per day with Platinum Performance). We would recommend that you could use Omega GRANDE to replace the Platinum Performance. As you would agree -- there is no point in you wasting your precious resources, time and energy!

Please keep in mind that these are only our feeding suggestions or recommendations. We believe it is always advisable to check with your equine nutritionist or your veterinarian concerning dietary changes you are considering for your horses.
