Product Benefits
- According to various research (Seven Seas Tea), it has been found out that, like fruit and vegetables, black tea contains powerful antioxidants which can help to prevent heart disease and some cancers. Four important medicinal ingredients of black tea are:
- Antioxidants:- The antioxidants in tea may help to reduce the risk of heart attack, probably by reducing blood clotting, improving dilation of the blood vessels, and by preventing the oxidation of ‘bad cholesterol’. With some cancers (especially colorectal cancer), the long term consumption of black tea appears to have a protective effect when more than 1.5 cups of tea per day are drunk. This is thought to be due to tea’s ability to promote the growth of ‘good’ bacteria and inhibit the growth of ‘bad’ bacteria.
-
Fluoride:- Fluoride helps to prevent tooth decay, and 1,000ml (5,.5 cups) of tea per day supplies 2.2mg of fluoride – equal to 70% of daily fluoride intake (maximum recommended levels are around 70mg per day). Tea appears to suppress the growth of oral bacteria that cause dental decay.
-
Caffeine:- Some people associate caffeine with anxiety, sleep disorders, and bad moods. But evidence suggests that we do not suffer any adverse effects from normal caffeine intake (under 300 mg per day, equivalent to 6-9 average cups of tea). The benefits of caffeine in tea include increased alertness and metal processing, improved mood and better mental performance during the ‘post-lunch dip’.
-
Hydration:- Any concern that tea is a diuretic that can lead to dehydration is dispelled by evidence that tea does not have a diuretic effect unless 300 mg of caffeine are taken at one sitting (i.e. 6-9 cups). Interestingly, trials on a team of mountain climbers at Everest Base Camp showed no diuretic effects of tea even at such an altitude. Because tea is a fluid, it leads to a positive fluid balance in the body and it is a misconception that tea drinking leads to a net fluid loss.
