Health Benefits of Simply Omega-3:

FLAX FOR WEIGHT LOSS
One of our customers was turned on to flax by word-of-mouth from a friend who lost 150 pounds and claimed the only dietary/lifestyle change was the addition of stabilized ground flax seed to the diet. Although this has not been the case with every person that consumes flax seed but it is quite common. Simply Omega-3’s flax seed helps stabilize blood sugar so that you feel full longer and you have the energy to live an active lifestyle in between meals instead of snacking.

For over 30 years, George Washington University, Washington, D.C. has offered a very effective and successful Weight Management Program. Arthur Frank, MD, MS, has been medical director of The Weight Management Program since he created it in 1976. The Program includes the addition of stabilized ground flax seed as a nutritional mechanism to deliver fiber and essential fatty acids – in conjunction with a low calorie diet. Since October of 1999, the Weight Management Program has chosen to provide ENRECO’s stabilized ground fortified flax for their participants (ENRECO®, INC. is Omega Fields Health’s parent company). For more information on George Washington University’s Weight Management Program, call 202-223-3077. Note: Our retail product -- Simply Omega-3 -- is that same stabilized ground fortified flax seed!

OMEGA-3 IN FLAX FOR DEPRESSION
August 16, 2007 - Many of us have heard about the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids in our diet. Now there's research that shows omega-3s have anti-depressant effects in the body. That's the latest test results from a study in Taiwan. Doctors discovered global areas that have a large consumption of omega-3s show a lower prevalence of depression.

Good sources of omega-3 fatty acids are fish and fish oil, as well as flax seed oil. Researchers caution not to use omega-3 fatty acids in the treatment of depression and bipolar disorder.
The study appears in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.

FLAX FOR LIGNANS
Flaxseeds are not only high in Omega-3 essential fatty acids, they are also high in plant lignans -- particularly SDG -- that are believed to play a role in fighting a broad range of cancer types. The plant lignans present in ground flax (43 mg per tablespoon) are fiber-like phytochemicals that are transformed into “animal” lignan in the colon by bacteria.  Lignans are naturally found in foods high in dietary fiber, and are structurally similar to estrogens (phyto estrogens). Like natural estrogens, they can bind to estrogen receptors, but without causing abnormal changes.  Plant lignans have been shown to help inhibit abnormal cell growth and help the immune system do its job. Flaxseed is the most abundant source of plant lignans. Stabilized ground flaxseed is one of the safest ways to get cancer-fighting Omega-3 and lignans into the body.

The phyto-estrogens found in flax lignan show potential against hot flashes as reported in the following recently published study:

Flaxseed Shows Potential Against Hot Flashes
By Stephen Daniells
8/29/2007- Flaxseed, a rich source of plant omega-3 and lignans, may reduce the frequency of hot flashes by almost 60 per cent, suggests new research from the US.

The study, published in the summer 2007 issue of the Journal of the Society for Integrative Oncology, could offer an alternative for the reduction of menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes to more established supplements like black cohosh or soy isoflavones.

Historically black cohosh has been a popular alternative to hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in many countries including the UK, where it is estimated that 9 million days worth of black cohosh supplements were purchased in 2004.

Data from a new pilot study from the Mayo Clinic suggest that dietary therapy using flaxseed may also decrease hot flashes in postmenopausal women who do not take estrogen.

A hot flash, or hot flush in Europe, is often described as a flash of intense warmth across much of the body that may be accompanied by sweating, reddening of the skin, or, occasionally, cold shivers.

The researchers recruited 29 postmenopausal women who suffered from hot flashes and refused to take estrogen because of a perceived increased risk of breast cancer. They women were assigned to receive daily supplements of flaxseed consisting of 40 grams of crushed flaxseed for six weeks. Full data was obtained from 21 of the women.

Participants completed questionnaires regarding the frequency and severity of their hot flashes before and after the trial. Lead researcher Sandhya Pruthi and co-workers report that the frequency of hot flashes decreased 50 per cent over six weeks, and the overall hot flash score decreased an average 57 per cent for the women who completed the trial.

The researchers also report improvements mood, joint or muscle pain, chills and sweating among the participants.

"We are quite pleased with the improvements noted by these women in their quality of life," stated Pruthi. "Not only does flaxseed seem to alleviate hot flashes, but it appears to have overall health and psychological benefits as well."

The researchers proposed that phyto-estrogen content of flaxseed - most notably lignans - were behind the apparent benefits. Lignans are antioxidants with weak estrogen-emulating characteristics, and have some anti-cancer effects. Flaxseed also appears to have anti-estrogen properties and has been shown in some recent research trials to decrease breast cancer risk.

"While results were promising, we have more research to conduct," said Pruthi. "Oftentimes, pilot studies show promising results that upon further study in a large, randomized placebo-controlled study turn out to be much less remarkable."

Dr. Pruthi confirmed that research in this field is ongoing, stating that the team hopes to open a new, larger clinical trial in 2008 evaluating flaxseed against a placebo to better refine the results, and to hopefully confirm flaxseed as a new alternative for hot flashes in women.

"Black cohosh was evaluated initially in a pilot study in a manner similar to that of the current trial. This pilot experience reported a reduction in hot flash score (frequency and severity) that exceeded 50 per cent," wrote the researchers. "A large randomized placebo-controlled study was subsequently initiated, using a crossover technique to assess efficacy and toxicity; however, this trial failed to provide evidence that black cohosh reduced hot flashes more than placebo. "These findings support the position that placebo-controlled trials are essential to follow up promising pilot data before declaring that a new agent clearly decreases hot flash frequency and severity," they added.

A study at the University of Minnesota determined that calcium may act to neutralize bile acids that contribute to colon cancer and omega-3 fatty acids reduced the colon cancer risk by 76 percent in a study of 320 men.

  • Colorectal cancer strikes an astonishing 145,000 Americans every year.
  • New research suggests two ways to resist it.
  • Women who consumed at least 800 milligrams of calcium had 25 percent less colorectal cancer risk than those who got no more than 400 milligrams, found an 8 1/2 -year University of Minnesota study of 45,300 women.
  • Those who ate the most omega-3 fatty acids had 76 percent less colorectal cancer risk than those who ate the least, in a 14-year Japanese study of 320 men.
  • Omega-3s from fish, walnuts, ground flaxseed and canola oil may cut cancer-boosting chemicals in the colon.

FLAX FOR HEART HEALTH
Flaxseed’s high content of alpha linolenic acids has made the ancient flax seed become our modern miracle food.Alpha linolenic acid is a type of plant-derived omega 3 fatty acid, similar to those found in fish such as salmon. Benefits of flax seed as shown in many studies include lowering total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (the Bad cholesterol) levels. Other benefits show that flax seed may also help lower blood triglyceride and blood pressure. It may also keep platelets from becoming sticky therefore reducing the risk of a heart attack. Get heart healthy – order Simply Omega-3 for yourself and your family.

FLAX FOR CELL MEMBRANE HEALTH
Flax seed is the richest plant source of Omega -3 essential fatty acid. Omega 3 is necessary for cell membrane integrity. Cell membrane integrity can be compromised by excess acidity at the cell levels and by too high levels of inflammatory fatty acids like Omega-6 from vegetable oils, and grain - and trans fats from processed foods, and animal fat products. If those membranes become deformed they cannot facilitate the elimination of metabolic wastes nor can they allow entry to the cell of nutrients either.  The cell membrane also is important in energy production … the electrolytes of magnesium and potassium inside the cell interact across the cell membrane with the electrolytes sodium and calcium in the fluid outside the cell to produce electrical energy. If the membrane is damaged from a deficiency of Omega-3, calcium and sodium rush into the cell and shut down the life forces.

Stabilized ground whole flax seed VS flaxseed meal
It's important to be aware of the differences between "Stabilized Ground Whole Flaxseed” and "Flaxseed Meal."  Many consumers are not aware of the fact that "Flaxseed Meal" actually refers to the by-product of the oil pressing process. In this case, the oil is either pressed out of the seed and sold as Flaxseed Oil or it is chemically removed from the seed and sold as Linseed Oil. The remaining dietary fiber and protein is sold as "Flaxseed Meal". The heart healthy Omega 3 fatty acids have been removed; therefore you are not receiving 100% of the nutritional value of the seed.  Flaxseed Meal is also significantly less stable than Stabilized Ground Whole Flaxseed because although most of the oil has been pressed out of the seed, the minimal amount of oil that is left is subject to rapid oxidation due to extensive damage done to the seed matrix during the oil pressing and removing processes.  Because many consumers are not aware that there is a difference – we encourage you to be sure to read the product label carefully.

Flax seed is also easy to include in your everyday diet – especially in the product Simply Omega-3. It has a delicious mild nutty flavor and can offer more for your body than many other one natural food. Scientific evidence has indicated that the absence of debilitating disease equals longevity.

Better than the competition:

Stabilized Ground Flax (Simply Omega-3) is tested safe and convenenient
FDA laboratory studies, concerning the safety of Omega Fields' stabilized ground flaxseed (the base of all Omega Fields' ground flax seed products), have proven that our stabilized ground flaxseed fed at 20%, 30% and even 40% of the diet does not have any detrimental effects. Keep in mind that this testing was done on the specific stabilized ground flaxseed our parent company, ENRECO®, Inc. manufactures -- we cannot speak for the safety of other ground flaxseed products.

You can have confidence in the Premium, Human-Grade, Non-GMO, 99.9% Pure, Stabilized, Ground, Fortified Flax we stabilized and grind for use in our formulas -- as it is protected from rancidity or loss of nutritional value:

  • Proprietary stabilization technology (developed by our company and patented 20 years ago, this year!) provides a stable, fortified flaxseed composition as a rich source of Omega-3 in the diet. Note: The process is all natural, nothing is added, no chemicals, and the ground flax is Kosher Certified -- stabilization consists of how we handle and process the seed.
  • Proprietary stabilization technology includes the inclusion of B-6 and Zinc when the seeds are going through the grinding process. B-6 and Zinc not only enhance the stabilization of the essential fatty acids, but also fortify the ground flax seed with the nutrients used by the body when flax seed is being metabolized. Since flaxseed naturally contains B-6 and Zinc antagonists, it is necessary to fortify ground flaxseed with Vitamin B-6 and Zinc to assure proper nutrient absorption.
  • Omega Fields' manufacturing facility is AIB* Quality Seal approved with highest rating -- SUPERIOR -- assuring the highest quality and safety.  *Note: The American Institute of Baking (AIB) Quality Seal is a preferred program for food-grade manufacturing plants that establishes and recognizes a standard for consistency in product quality and safety. ENRECO® / Omega Fields® is proud to have earned the AIB “SUPERIOR” Rating.
  • Flaxseed is contracted for and purchased from northern Canadian producers. Because of the rich soil and short, intense growing season -- the flaxseed from northern Canada contains a higher percentage of Omega-3 than other flaxseeds.
  • High quality standard mean that we reject more seed than we accept. Who do you think accepts the rejected seeds?

FLAX OIL VS GROUND FLAX
According to the Health Sciences Institute, the most effective way to eat flax seeds is in the ground form. This is when the flax seed oil and fiber is the most bioavailable -- and you get the most benefit (like Simply Omega-3!). Flax seed has a mild, nutty flavor and is much more palatable in the ground form than straight pressed flax seed oil. Further, one quarter cup of ground flax seed is the equivalent of 17 flax seed oil capsules, so there is substantial savings.
